Our proud partner
Craft brewing since 1894 — Bavikhove, West Flanders
A shared passion
De Witte Leeuw and Brouwerij De Brabandere share the same conviction: quality admits no compromise. As a historic restaurant on the Graslei in Ghent, established in a building dating from 1374, we found in this family brewery the ideal partner to offer our guests the finest Belgian beers.
Brouwerij De Brabandere was founded in 1894 by beer enthusiast Adolphe De Brabandere and his son Jozef in Bavikhove. What began as a small farmhouse brewery with a few copper kettles and a modest storage room grew into one of the largest independent breweries in Belgium.
Today, five generations later, the brewery remains true to its family roots. Under the leadership of Albert De Brabandere, continuous investment is made in modernisation, without losing sight of the artisanal tradition.
The secret of De Brabandere? Time as an ingredient. Every beer is given room to mature at its own pace. Aroma hops, natural yeast cultures and pure water from their own source form the foundation. This results in beers with character — from the uncompromising Bavik Super Pils to the refined Petrus Sour Beers that age for two years in French oak foeders.
For De Witte Leeuw, this philosophy of patience and craftsmanship is a perfect match with our own kitchen, where authentic Flemish dishes are prepared with the same passion and care.
A rich history
Adolphe De Brabandere submits a request to the municipal council of Bavikhove to build a brewery. Son Jozef brews his first beer that same year.
Albert De Brabandere takes over and expands distribution to beer merchants, significantly increasing the brewery's reach.
The recipe that has remained unchanged for over 50 years is born: 100% barley malt, aroma hops, no dilution and an extended cold conditioning.
The Petrus range is launched, named after the Flemish name for Saint Peter. Petrus Oud Bruin quickly becomes the brewery's flagship beer.
Beer hunter Michael Jackson chooses the name for this revolutionary beer — 100% foeder-aged. It becomes the world reference for sour beers.
Albert De Brabandere Jr. officially takes the helm and invests heavily in capacity expansion and modernisation of the brewery.
“Time is an essential and rare ingredient. Every beer is given room to mature at its own pace, resulting in flavours full of character.”
