De Witte Leeuw
Our Story
For over twenty years the taste of Ghent, on the waterfront of the Graslei.
Since 2004
In the heart of Ghent
In June 2004 we opened the doors of De Witte Leeuw, at an address that needs no introduction: Graslei 6. Anyone who has ever been to Ghent knows the sight — the row of medieval guild houses reflected in the waters of the Leie, a view captured in thousands of photographs and paintings. We have the privilege of working in this spot every day, and we are still aware of it.
What started as a dream — an honest restaurant in an extraordinary location — has grown into a fixture of Ghent's dining scene. For over twenty years we have been serving at these tables. Twenty years of welcoming guests, watching the seasons change, and cooking with love.
Our Kitchen
Belgian, honest & full of flavour
We serve Belgian cuisine the way it was meant to be: generous, honest and full of flavour. Think of stew that has simmered for hours, oven-baked endive wrapped in ham, crispy shrimp croquettes, a steaming waterzooi, or a portion of fresh Zeeland mussels. No frills, just craftsmanship. Our chef and his team work with fresh, high-quality ingredients and follow the rhythm of the seasons.
The Graslei
The heart of Ghent
The Graslei is not just any street — it is the heart of Ghent. The row of historic guild houses, built between the 12th and 17th centuries, together form one of the most beautiful cityscapes in Belgium. During the day they are reflected in the waters of the Leie; in the evening they are atmospherically illuminated.
Our Team — with a passion for hospitality
Behind De Witte Leeuw stands a close-knit team of around thirty staff members. Since November 2023, Alessandro Xiang has been at the helm as managing director. With a keen eye for hospitality and a passion for the trade, he brings fresh energy to the restaurant — without compromising the warmth and character for which De Witte Leeuw is known. Our team speaks Dutch, French and English.
