Through the Years

De Witte Leeuw today

De Witte Leeuw Today

First recorded as a stone in 1374, as a smithy in 1397. In 1690 it became the Witte Leeuw.

The building at Graslei 6 is one of the best-preserved medieval trade facades in Europe. For centuries, the Graslei was the beating heart of the Ghent grain trade, and its facades tell the story of guilds, merchants and craftsmen. Today we bring that same story to life at the table — with dishes rooted in the Flemish tradition and prepared with the finest seasonal ingredients.

Our Kitchen

Authentic Flemish dishes, prepared with passion and craftsmanship

Our kitchen revolves around the great classics of Belgian gastronomy. Taste our famous Gentse Waterzooi — creamy, hearty and prepared with fresh chicken and local vegetables. Or choose our Flemish Stew, the same recipe for 25 years with slowly braised beef and Westmalle Trappist beer.

From September to April we serve fresh Zeeland mussels — in the pot with celery, onion and a splash of white wine. Our homemade shrimp croquettes are available year-round and remain a favourite among our guests. Discover also our Belgian beer menu, featuring Trappist ales, abbey beers and local brews.
